30 Days of Photos – Day 6 Sunsets

This time of the year the sunsets here in Missouri are beautiful. I don’t always get to capture them, but tonight on a friend’s family farm, I took just a bit of time to capture the sun going down.

Day 6 – Sunsets

Capturing sunsets can be a bit tricky, for me that is. I love the way the look, but I want to capture the sky the exact way I see it, not capture it and alter it with a photo program. Tonight I was at a friend’s and this tractor and augur were setting at the edge of the field. I walked to the fence to capture the sunset, but did not feel like I was really capturing its beauty. I walked away and up to the tractor, turned around and saw what I needed to do. I dropped all of the way to my belly, decreased my f-stop, increased my shutter speed and crossed my fingers. Here is the result of my sunset picture.

30 Days of Photos – Day 5 Focus

Sometimes as a mom my focus is spot on, sometimes it is completely off focus, and then other times you get this…

Day 5 – Focus

During the golden hour the spider webs were catching all of the sun rays and the barbwire really stood out to me. I like to play with focus and by using my f-stop, have things behind what I am shooting to be in focus or not. This mama cow chose the perfect time to walk past the fence I was shooting at and therefore my focus was complete.

30 Days of Photos – Day 4 Work

After a great day with friends shopping, I come home to my three farm hands and they are working.

Day 4 – Work

Kids are amazing to me. We had told them yesterday that the windows on the Gator were needing to be cleaned and that that was a job they could do after they got home from school. That is exactly what they were doing, work, and doing to well together.

30 Days of Photos – Day 3 Cattle

Again, making the rules up as I go along…Today I knew that we would be working cattle, thus I decided that today’s photo would be Cattle. The challenge here was to find a new perspective and to keep the images under 15. I had 25 images today.

Day 3 – Cattle

This calf is in the working chute with a few of his buddies. I was not interested in getting all of them in my frame, I just wanted one. One in the right spot that I could catch its face, its expression. You see I watch the cows. Every day I see them walking behind the house to go out to pasture or come in for water. Seeing them calms me. At the end of a busy day or at the start of what will be a crazy day, I stand at my back door and look out and watch the cows. Sometimes I go to the fence and just watch and listen or get on the Gator and drive out to see them and check on them. To me they are calming. To me they are a wonder and a beauty to behold.

30 Days of Photos – Day 2 Light

I am still making up the rules for this challenge as I go along, but one thing I do know is that I want to challenge myself with this project and to help others as they go about working on their own photography journey.

Day 2 – Light

Light is my favorite tool to use when I photograph. I am always trying to lean more about the light and how it affects my pictures. Like today’s photograph. Kendall is setting on her bed looking out her window which faces east. The day is over cast, but there is enough light coming through her window that she is illuminated. I did set my camera to a higher ISO to get the added grain in the picture. I also used the built-in filter in the camera and took this in monochrome. For her not to be feeling well, I feel the light helped to capture her and her youthful innocence.

30 Days of Photos – Day 1 Family

Welcome to my first 30 day blog challenge! Who am I challenging? Well, myself of course. I have put this little blog on the back burner and decided today that it was time to dust off the cobwebs and get back to it. So here we go!

Day 1 – Family

We are still harvesting corn and soybeans, but the end is in sight. Today was a good day in the field; perfect weather wise, no break downs and I got to spend a little time in the combine. For the past few years I have tried to make sure that we have a picture of all five of us in the field together. As Seth was hopping out of the combine to run to a neighbors, I sat up the tripod, set the timer on the camera and hit the button. The results I feel turned out pretty good!

Learning As I Go – Campfire Cinnamon Bites

These bites are not hard, not healthy, but oh so delicious!  The edges/outside gets crispy while the inside stay warm and tender cooked!  You can drizzle these with the icing from the cinnamon roll tube, toss in cinnamon & sugar, powdered sugar, or just eat plain!  And of course, if you’re not a camper, you could easily make these on your stove top!  I’m sure they would be just as tasty!!” – Katy

Farm Girl Cook’n – Fresh Summer Corn Chowder

In Iowa, the corn state, it is totally appropriate to have a supper of only fresh corn on the cob this time of year; salty, golden nuggets dripping in butter.  Nothing else, well maybe some fresh tomatoes and a slice of bread, but it is the main course.  Yes, our blood sugar is probably screaming from the overdose of carbs, but what a way to go!” – Mary

Green Grass Girl – The Tallgrass Prairie and Looking for Beauty

I love traveling to these gorgeous locations, but I think it’s good for me to live my day-to-day life in the humble prairie. Why? Because the prairie teaches me to look for beauty in the here and now—to hunt for wildflowers amid otherwise barren landscapes and to notice unique surprises along my ordinary path. They are there! But I have to look for them.” – Rachel

Mama’s Journal – Making the Grade

Its been 13 years since I last interviewed for a job. Thirteen years. Saying that out loud really hits home.

It was the spring of 2003 and a nonprofit was looking for an Executive Director. I was encouraged by several, including my husband, to apply for the job. I remember thinking that I was probably not going to get the job, but felt I had most of the attributes that they were looking for. I was then prepared a few days later when I got the call that they were going to go with someone else.

Sure, okay, no big deal. I was pregnant at the time and was happy working at the school as a Para. A few days after that, I received another call that their first choice decided not to take the job and they would like to offer it to me. Really?! So with that second phone call I was fully employed outside of the home for three years. That my friends was my last interview, last paycheck and last time I had to account for my time to someone else.

This morning I began thinking again about jobs, employment and making the grade. I guess in one way or another we all have our jobs that we do or are really good at. I could list the countless jobs that I do daily, weekly, monthly and seasonally. Some I am much better at than others; like being a mama. I think I have a pretty good handle on that job. Splitting fire wood, not so much. I have the strength, but a terrible aim. (We had to get a new axe handle because of me.)

What about employment? Are we destined to be employed and answer to “The Man”. I guess at the end of the day we want to be appreciated, receive a fair wage and feel confident that what we are doing is good for our family and our country. I just want to know that who ever is my “boss” for the day, that I have the necessary clothing, food and fuel to do the job that they want me to do. Take a day last week when I had to go to town and then rush home because I forgot to wash a certain basketball uniform that was needed by 5:30 that evening. (Don’t worry, I got it washed in time for him to play his game.)

How about making the grade? We are weaning calves this weekend and they have to make the grade or they will be sold at the sale barn. Now that does not mean that they are not good calves and will not produce a quality product. It just means that they did not have everything that we are looking for when we consider who will be replacement heifers and who will be bulls. So we weed through them by looking at their appearance, checking their personality/disposition, looking at their genetics and watching them walk. (The walk is very important.) We are looking to see if they will pass and make the grade for the job we are needing them to do.

In life are we really doing the jobs that we are to do? Are we showing up and being held accountable by someone, either ourselves or an employer? Do we make the grade not just once but every single day?

Those are questions we each have to answer for our selves. When we do, will we like the answers?

Blessings to you,
Laurie – Country Link

Dirt Under My Fingernails – By the People

“To be twelve is to be old enough not just to learn historical facts, but to begin to feel a sense of history, to appreciate the past and compare it to the present.  To touch and visit our landmarks and monuments; to meet, even briefly, those who represent us and govern our country, is to become a participant in our nation, not a bystander, and thus to help bear the burden of the past and future.” – Julie
